The illuminati, a very interesting and broad topic that I hope I can “enlighten” you on. The illuminati or The Order of the Illuminati is a name that many groups both real and fictionists have shared. The first recorded group to use this name was the Bavarian Illuminati. Illuminati is the plural of the Latin word illuminatus, meaning “The Enlightened.” This group was founded on May 1, 1776 and was later disbanded in 1785 by the Bavarian government under the encouragement of the Roman Catholic Church. The three main things to talk about the illuminati are how they started, the symbols and people involved, and of course… the conspiracy theory’s associated with this group.
As we know the original illuminati was founded in Bavaria in 1776. This group was formed by Adam Weishaupt. The group was in fact a vast and complex system of spies and counter spies. Every recruit answered to a superior who they did not know. Every member in the illuminati was known by a code name; Weishaupt’s Name was Spartacus and the other original four members were known as Ajax, Agathon, Tiberius, and Erasmus Roterodamus. The true nature and goals of this group are commonly debated between historians; the main two arguments are saying the Order was not egalitarian or democratic internally, and sought to promote the doctrines of equality and freedom throughout society and others claim they sought to combat religion and put replace it with rationalism. Weishaupt’s radical rationalism was destined to fail and did fail in 1784 when intercepted writings were found to be seditious and the group was banned later in 1785. Weishaupt can be referred to as a human devil by some historians who believe the man himself and his goals were solely evil. But many others claim the man and his goals were naïve and optimistic but were not evil in any sense.
Know on to common symbols and participants in any illuminati group. There are a plethora of symbols associated with the illuminati such as the all Seeing Eye or the eye of providence and an upside down pentagram. Almost every symbol today that is associated with the illuminati has no merit with the original group and serves only to fuel conspiracy theories. The original illuminati had only a mere five members at the start and today there is a multitude of illuminati websites allowing you to join. It is often stated that well known movie stars and other famous figures are part of the illuminati.
Finally, the part everyone’s been waiting for… the conspiracy’s involving the illuminati. There is in fact only one conspiracy theory around the illuminati. It goes like this; after the illuminati were disbanded in 1785 Adam Weishaupt escaped the country and lived in exile until 1830. But, during this time he expanded the group and at the time of his death the membership rate had skyrocketed to 2000 plus members in Europe alone. This group has now become dedicated to making a new world order with a unified government that essentially controls humanity. Also, the group is said to be behind some of the biggest events in world history such as the French revolution, the assassination of JFK and 9/11. They are said to have caused these in order to gain more power and get closer to taking over the world. The one issue with the theory is no one can prove that the order actually survived its suppression in Bavaria in 1785. The only other illuminati recorded acts made by Weishaupt after the suppression was a written trilogy recording facts on Enlightenment. The new order of the illuminati has become a very public order not afraid to reveal who they are; the complete opposite of the original secret society who was dedicated to secrecy above all else.
The final point to make on the illuminati is that it was a group that sought to eradicate superstition, remove church rule and abuse of state power. But, in the end they became the most talked about superstition of our age.
